A recent article from the NY Times Fashion & Style section prompted a vigorous discussion on the APA Net forum about the often extreme use of Photoshop retouching in fashion photography. Whilst it is hardly a new debate, the issue continues to stir strong feelings both for and against digital photo manipulation.
The article cites examples of what looks like a Photoshop backlash trend currently emerging in the fashion media. Most notably, Peter Lindbergh’s recent series of French Elle covers featuring female celebrities au naturel, without the aid of makeup artists or retouching.
So is this really a trend – or just a passing gimmick? Do fashion magazines have a responsibility to represent reality, or a license to create a distorted fantasy?
